Receiving the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching has made me proud of the dedication I have given to both my teaching career and my students. I am both honored and humbled to be recognized as a leader in my field at this level. The professional growth I experienced during the application process was significant. I am grateful for being nominated by a well-respected colleague and look forward to networking with fellow awardees.

Janice Mitchener Carmel, IN | 7-12, Mathematics, 2009

Janice Mitchener has been an educator for 26 years and has spent the last 20 years at Carmel High School. She has also taught at Greenwood Community High School and Southern Wells High School. She currently teaches Advanced Placement Calculus, Honors Precalculus, and Finite Mathematics. Janice enjoys using various activities to engage her students, and her expertise in graphing calculator technology flows into the classroom as it is an integral part of her daily lessons. She was also an instructor at a mathematics enrichment camp, engaging students with hands-on projects. As a certified Teaching with Technology Regional Instructor, Janice provides professional development on using technology in the classroom to teachers and has presented sessions at several state and national conferences. Janice was named 2007 Carmel Clay Schools Teacher of the Year and was a 2008 finalist for Indiana Teacher of the Year. She received the MathMovesU Math Hero Award in 2006 and the Indianapolis Power and Light Golden Apple Award in 2005. Janice has a B.S. in Mathematics Education from Purdue University and an M.S. in Secondary Education from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. She is certified in mathematics for grades 9-12.
