As a biology teacher, I think of all things as dynamically connected. And so, I look with deep gratitude to the family members, friends, and colleagues who have mentored me in my career. This award belongs to them as much as to me. Teachers are not born; they are taught, nurtured, and encouraged. This incredibly meaningful award is an affirmation of my many sources of support and the profound and joyful satisfaction I have experienced working with young people for 30 years.

The official biography below was current at the time of the award.

Judy Jones has taught Biology, Chemistry, and Human Biology for 30 years. Since 1996, she has been teaching Biology 1 and 2 at East Chapel Hill High School. Biology 2 is a human biology course she developed for students who are eager to continue their biology studies. One-fourth of the school's seniors take this course. Judy believes that students who experience the active processes of science will take the joy of learning into their lives. Judy also advises the 90-member Science Club at her school. In addition to successfully participating in many science competitions, club members do many service projects. Some students help take Judy's snakes to elementary schools and summer camps, giving younger students an exciting hands-on experience. For several years, Judy has helped develop State biology standards. Recently, she worked with others to produce a complete biology curriculum with helpful suggestions for implementation. Creating an engaging and challenging curriculum for all North Carolina biology students was deeply fulfilling. Judy also mentors student teachers. Judy has a B.A. in Biology and an M.A.T. in Secondary Science from Stanford University. She is a National Board Certified Teacher.
