Teaching is more than just a job for me. It is a true passion. Being a teacher allows me an opportunity to make a positive impact on children’s lives, which can be powerful. Receiving the Presidential Award is a validation of my commitment to creating an environment that provides the right amount of structure and organization while allowing my students the freedom to learn and grow. This award encourages me to continue to set high expectations so my students will succeed in today’s world.  

Kimberly Simmons Dover, DE | K-6, Science, 2014

Kimberly Simmons taught for 11 years at W. Reily Brown Elementary School, where she taught first and second grade, and was the first grade English Partner for the Spanish Immersion Program. Currently, she is a kindergarten teacher at East Dover Elementary School As an elementary teacher, Kimberly works to give her students the foundational blocks of scientific inquiry learning. She shares her passion and excitement for learning science with all her students by creating an environment where they learn to question, explore, investigate, and analyze. In addition to teaching in the classroom, Kimberly is the Lead Mentor Teacher for all first-year elementary teachers in the Caesar Rodney School District through the District’s Comprehensive Induction Program. She was selected as the 2013 Teacher of the Year for the Caesar Rodney School District. In the summer of 2013, Kimberly represented Delaware at International Space Camp for Educators. She serves on various leadership committees in her school and district as well as serving on the state’s Teacher of the Year Advisory Board.  Kimberly has a B.S. in commerce from the University of Virginia and a M.Ed. from Wilmington University. Kimberly is certified to teach kindergarten through sixth grade. She has also earned a certification of advanced study for school administration from Wilmington University.
