Jane Patterson Mlenar received a B.S. in elementary education from the University of Wisconsin (UW)–Madison in 1990, her initial National Board Certification in 2002, and an M.Ed. in professional development in 2004 from UW–La Crosse. Jane started her teaching career in Milwaukee Public Schools in 1990 at Fritsche Middle School. She was part of an NSF grant to teach standards-based instruction starting in 1995 and had the privilege to travel around the state of Wisconsin teaching weeklong graduate courses to teachers for seven summers sharing the standards-based activities and best practices at Wisconsin Academy Staff Development Initiative (WASDI) academies. Between 1995 and 2000, Jane also taught mathematics methods courses at both Marquette University and UW–Milwaukee. In 2002, she started her career at Greendale Middle School (GMS) where she continues to work today. From 2006 to 2010, Jane taught in the master's program at UW–La Crosse leading two different learning communities. She has spent time on the Wisconsin Mathematics Council (WMC) board and was an editor and author for the WMC Journal for a period of time in the late ‘90s. Jane won the PAEMST award in 2000 and aside from a most spectacular trip to Washington, D.C., where she met other educators with similar ideas, values, and work ethic, it also opened doors to be able to participate in a variety of initiatives at a state level. Jane is currently a Math Instructional Support Specialist at GMS and works as a mentor for National Board candidates both locally and at the state level.
