Ember Karey M. Santos earned her B.A. in elementary education from the University of South Carolina, Aiken (USC-A), then receiving her I.M.A. in natural science/elementary education, and a Master’s in Natural Science, both from the University of South Carolina. She is National Board Certified. From 1989 to 2018, Karey worked at Millbrook Elementary School, serving in a variety of positions including teaching self-contained fourth and fifth grade; Math/Science/GT Teacher; and Math/Science Specialist. It was while working here that she won the 2001 Presidential Award. t Millbrook, she also served as a staff resource person, teaching all 750+ students weekly in 40 minute enrichment laboratories, and as Special Area Teacher Chair. Since 2018, she has acted as Adjunct Faculty at USC-A, designing and teaching STEM for elementary levels and supervising interns in early childhood, elementary, and middle level placements. Karey has served as Pop Ed Facilitator and Teaching Fellows Regional Interviewer for the South Carolina Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention, and Advancement; as an instructor for USC-A/DNR Teacher Institute; has reviewed PAEMST applications at the state and national levels; and has facilitated numerous workshops at local, state, and national levels for NSTA, South Carolina Science Council, NCTM, South Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and Aiken County Public School District. Karey has been published in various journals including Science and Children, Science Scope, and New Elementary Science. Awards Karey has received include Spirit of Ruth Patrick Award for Excellence in Science Teaching; CSRA Environmental Teacher of the Year; National Awardee, PAEMST; NSTA/Optical Data Awards; NASCO/Science Scope Award; and American Nuclear Society Award.
