The Presidential Award completely stuns me. To be recognized among the other people I know from Montana that have received this award is truly humbling. PAEMST recognition is also a bit daunting because it means that I have to reflect well upon both the organization and the teachers who have been recognized by it. The PAEMST award is truly an honor and it serves as a daily reminder that I need to continue to pursue excellence in this profession for myself and for my past and future students.

Daniel Bartsch Billings, MT | 7-12, Science, 2013

The official biography below was current at the time of the award.

Dan Bartsch has taught science at Billings Senior High School for the past 12 years. Prior to that, Dan was a guidance counselor and health educator at Billings Senior after joining the staff in 1995. Dan's tenure at Billings Senior began after a year and a half of teaching biology at Billings Central High School. As the science department chair, Dan works with 10 other science teachers at Billings Senior to provide the best possible science education to their students. In addition, Dan serves as a leader on the senior high school improvement team where he designs and implements school-wide initiatives and plans professional development. Dan also sponsors a service club called Senior Advocates and is a STEM club sponsor. He also serves on two scholarship committees. Dan's greatest contribution to the staff and student body of Billings Senior is his ability to make the study of science, particularly human anatomy, an engaging and immersive experience for his students. Human Anatomy is a hands-on course that serves a wide variety of students. On any day, students in Mr. Bartsch's class can be found writing, drawing, experimenting, discussing, and, most of all, thinking. Dan has a B.A. in biology and a B.S. in health and human performance from the University of Montana, and a M.Ed. from Montana State University in Billings. Dan is Nationally Board Certified in science.
