The Presidential Award identifies educators who are constantly seeking new means of exciting students in their education and preparing them for the decisions they will make in the future. The individuals recognized for their efforts are a dynamic group of educators who are dedicated to their profession and who exhibit a passion for their chosen field. These teachers are the tops in their field. It is an honor to be included within this group. 

Betsy Sullivan Madison, MS | 7-12, Science, 2013

The official biography below was current at the time of the award.

Betsy Sullivan is a 30-year veteran teacher. She is completing her seventh year at Madison Central High School in the Madison County School District. She currently teaches Advanced Placement Biology, Biomedical Research, and Chemistry to 10th-12th graders.  She previously taught in Simpson County Schools, Pearl Municipal Schools, and Forrest County Schools. Betsy served nine years as an informal educator at the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science.  Her enthusiasm for education is evident in her classroom. Students are active in lab activities and problem solving. She also sponsors the Science Olympiad team and science research group. During many summers, Betsy has shared her love of science through camps at the University of Southern Mississippi's Camp Invention and the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, where she volunteers. Betsy is a Mississippi Science Teachers Association board member, on the national planning committee for the 2015 National Congress on Science Education.  She is a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International and mentors other teachers who are seeking higher degrees. Betsy entered the science education program as a freshman at the University of Southern Mississippi, where she returned to pursue her Ph.D. in science education (biology). She holds a secondary science certification.
