Receiving the Presidential Award means that I am doing what I believe in, which is making a difference in the lives of local students. I value growth, trust, and joy, and that has allowed me to do what I love and have a positive impact on those I teach and lead every day. This award is a reminder of the importance of the work that I do, and I am humbled as well as appreciative of the opportunity to be recognized for my continued passion for excellence in mathematics education for all students.

Brittany Lewis has taught at DC Prep Public Charter School for the last seven years. She began her teaching career at Apple Tree Early Learning Public Charter School in preschool for two years. She then began teaching kindergarten as the mathematics lead teacher for five years at DC Prep’s Edgewood Elementary Campus and moved into the position of Math Department Chair at the Anacostia Elementary Campus where she currently teaches first grade mathematics and intervention. As the Math Department Chair, she is an instructional coach for kindergarten and first grade mathematics teachers. In addition to teaching, she also developed and wrote the kindergarten mathematics curriculum used across all campuses. Brittany has led professional development on the topics of coherence, fluency, and problem solving. Brittany has true a love of mathematics and this has led her to create and implement initiatives for students and families to engage with the subject in a fun, interactive way. She began an afterschool tutoring program entitled “I heart math” to support growth for all students. In her classroom, students use hands-on learning and mathematics meetings to review fluency concepts. Brittany earned a B.S. in clinical psychology and a M.A. in elementary education from Lehigh University and is certified in kindergarten through sixth grade elementary education.
