Having my passion for teaching and learning recognized is rewarding and humbling. This award provides further testimony of the dedication, perseverance, and collaborative work of my family, students, parents, colleagues, school administrators and officials, and community. I am honored to take the challenge to continue to integrate effective research based practices to ensure that all students succeed in a global economy.

Thora Henry Letang St. Thomas, VI | 7-12, Science, 2015

Thora Henry Letang has been teaching General Science to 7th and 8th grade students at the Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School for the past nine years. She has also taught mathematics to incoming 5th and 6th graders at the Summer Bridge Program. Thora has presented her research findings in the biomedical sciences at several conferences. Through collaboration with local scientists, her passion for the sciences has compelled her to design and execute engaging and motivating inquiry-based and project-based learning activities to enable students to obtain a more profound understanding of the natural world. Thora is involved in building a positive school community in her roles as the Assistant Coordinator of the Blazing Cultural Bearers school dance group, as well as the Book and Technology Clubs. She provides extended tutorial sessions to English language learners during lunch periods and afterschool. She also initiated a student parent teacher support group to establish a tracking system of students’ achievement and performance beyond their school years. Thora earned a B.S. in biology from the University of the Virgin Islands and a M.Ed. in teaching and learning with an emphasis in leadership from Liberty University. She is currently certified, and highly qualified, to teach science in the secondary grades and English as a second language in the elementary and secondary grades.
