Dora Borja Miura
Dora Borja Miura has been an educator for more than 20 years and has spent the last seven years teaching high school Geometry and Advanced Algebra at Saipan Southern High School in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) Public School System. Additionally, she is a CNMI distance education high school geometry instructor. She has also worked at San Antonio Elementary School in the CNMI Public School System and was an adjunct instructor of Math Methods at Northern Marianas Community College.
Dora’s daily afterschool or lunch peer tutoring group engages struggling students and student leaders in opportunities to improve mathematical understandings. Her love of teaching goes beyond the classroom. Her leadership in the community has resulted in the statewide implementation of monthly mathematics competitions that aim to instill a love of mathematics in the students of CNMI.
Dora has shared her passion for mathematics and teaching with other teachers in the CNMI Public School System through her research in ethnomathematics specific to the students of the CNMI.
Dora earned a B.S. in business administration from Georgetown University, a M.Ed. in education administration from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, and a Ph.D. in education from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa. She is a state certified elementary and high school teacher and is the 2016 CNMI State Teacher of the Year.
