The Presidential Award means validation for the determination and hard work demonstrated throughout my career as well as the resiliency shown as obstacles arose. The process provided an opportunity to reflect on my practice as I work toward mastering my craft. Receipt of this award is a motivator to continue getting involved, growing, learning, and supporting others along their educational journey. The award was made possible through the support of family, students, and critical friends.

Katherine McCann Montpelier, VT | 7-12, Mathematics, 2015

Katherine (Kate) McCann has been an educator for 18 years, teaching grades 9–12 at U-32 Middle High School for the past 10 years. Her classroom experience ranges from 7th grade mathematics to Advanced Placement (AP) Statistics. She currently teaches geometry to freshmen and sophomores and AP Statistics to juniors and seniors. Kate demonstrates a strong rapport with students and provides an environment in which students feel comfortable asking questions and expressing confusion in pursuit of a deeper learning of mathematics. As she shares her excitement for mathematics, she strives to instill in her students the Common Core Mathematical Practice of making sense of problems and persevering in solving them. Kate has presented professional development at the local and state levels. She serves as Co-President of the Vermont Council of Teachers of Mathematics, where she is currently working on launching a statewide math fair for spring 2017. She is part of the Vermont National Education Association’s National Board Certification Committee and provides candidate support for the central Vermont cohort of teachers seeking to achieve National Board Certification. Kate earned a B.S. in mathematics, a M.Ed. in curriculum and instruction from the University of Vermont, and is certified to teach grades 7–12 mathematics. Kate is National Board Certified in adolescence and young adulthood mathematics.
