Receiving the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching is an incredible experience. It is a distinct honor to represent my esteemed fellow educators in this capacity. I accept this award on behalf of all of the outstanding teachers, mentors, students, and families who have influenced and inspired me. I will continue to pass on the passion for education that they have instilled in me.

Emily Theriault-Kimmey Ann Arbor, MI | K-6, Mathematics, 2012

Emily Theriault-Kimmey has been an educator for 15 years. She has spent the last 13 years teaching fifth grade at Pattengill Elementary School in the Ann Arbor Public Schools.  Previously, she taught at Allen Elementary School in the Ann Arbor Public Schools. Emily is currently Lead Teacher at her school. She is a member of the Pattengill Technology Committee and the Collaborative Action Research for Equity Team. Emily is a truly dedicated educator, and her dedication reaches beyond the classroom, as exemplified by her multiple leadership roles. Emily serves on both the district Math Advisory Committee and Science Advisory Committee. This work enables her to present mathematics and science professional development sessions to her colleagues throughout the district. Emily is particularly committed to equity in mathematics and science education. She has developed a successful lunchtime program for struggling mathematicians. She also serves as cochair of the Pattengill Science Fair. Emily is a mentor teacher to graduate-student interns at the University of Michigan. In addition, she is involved in mathematics professional development through the University of Michigan. Emily has a B.A. in psychology and an M.A. in education, both from the University of Michigan. She is a certified elementary school teacher and is certified in elementary curriculum.
