I am honored and humbled to receive this award at a point in time when new science standards are on our doorstep. I have an opportunity to celebrate and promote science education excellence in my state. The award is a testament to all of the colleagues who have supported me and pushed me to provide the best science education possible for our students. I now feel a sense of vitality and responsibility for making sure I am part of exciting changes for science education reform in the future. 

Tyler Hoxley East Hartford, CT | 7-12, Science, 2011

Tyler Hoxley has taught science and biology at East Hartford High School for the past 19 years. Inquiry and technology play an important role in his classroom. Instruction in all his classes incorporates research-based effective teaching strategies. He recently attended a conference at the National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science and has been actively using case studies in his classroom. Tyler has twice co-chaired his school’s New England Association of Schools and Colleges Committee on Assessment for Student Learning. He is a member of the science department's Data Team, helping to design and implement common formative assessments. He is also a cooperating teacher for preservice teachers from local universities, and he supports new educators as a State-certified teacher mentor. Recently, Tyler was selected to serve on the Connecticut State Department of Education Next Generation Science Standards Review Committee.  Tyler was honored by his peers when he was selected as the East Hartford Public School District Teacher of the Year in 2005. Tyler has a B.S. in biology education, an M.S. in science education, and a sixth-year degree in educational leadership, all from Central Connecticut State University. He is certified to teach general science and biology for grades 7-12.
