The process of applying for the Presidential Award contributed to my growth as a mathematics teacher. Countless doors opened for me after receiving the award, including work at the district, state, and national levels. To this day, I am inspired to support educational excellence in mathematics classes throughout the country using the high standards in the dimensions of the Presidential Award.

Amy Herman Louisville, KY | 7-12, Mathematics, 1989

Amy Herman received the 1989 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching when she was teaching at J. M. Atherton High School in Louisville, KY. She currently serves as a professional learning consultant for Math Solutions (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt). Previously, she served as the District Mathematics Specialist (K-12) for Jefferson County Public Schools for eight years. In that position, she designed curriculum, assessment, and professional development for Jefferson County, a large urban district of over 100,000 students. Before that, she served as a mathematics consultant for the Kentucky Department of Education for three years and as a high school mathematics teacher for 26 years. She also taught at Bellarmine University and the University of Louisville. In addition to the Presidential Award, Amy received the Mathematics Education Service and Achievement Award from the Kentucky Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Greater Louisville Council of Teachers of Mathematics Educator Award for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics. Amy is a coauthor of Algebra 1 - Explorations and Applications, and Algebra 2 - Explorations and Applications (Houghton Mifflin-McDougal Littell Company). She is currently working on a high school mathematics teacher resource book for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Amy earned a B.A. in mathematics and an M.A. in mathematics from the University of Louisville. She is certified in mathematics 7-12, computer science, gifted resource, computer science resource, and mathematics program resource.
