Valerie L. Mills is an independent mathematics education consultant, currently working with mathematics educators and institutions from across the county. She is a Past-President of the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics and the Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM). During her 40+ years in education she has taught high school mathematics (Ypsilanti High School, 1975-1996); served as Mathematics Department Chair; K-12 Mathematics Coordinator; Director of Curriculum; Mathematics and Science Center Director; and is recently retired from Oakland Schools, a regional resource center serving 28 school districts and approximately 225,000 students. Valerie was the Principal Investigator on five Mathematics and Science Partnership grants working with high needs districts; a Teacher Author on the Core Plus Mathematics Project; an advisor for the Connected Mathematics Project (CMP); past chair of NCTM's Academy Services Committee; and has written numerous articles and professional development resources including the Secondary Lenses on Learning series. Her most recent publications are A Fresh Look at Formative Assessment in Mathematics Teaching (NCTM, 2019) and Intentional Professional Learning Design: Models, Tools, and the Synergies they Produce Supporting Teacher Growth (Educational Assessment, 2020). Valerie was awarded the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, the Milken National Educator Award, and MCTM’s lifetime achievement award for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Mathematics Education. She is a frequent presenter at local, state, and national meetings.
