As an educator it is heartening that science education is valued, and a bonus to be recognized for presenting opportunities for my students to be actively engaged in learning about how things work. We need citizens who can solve problems in a world where scientific solutions are necessary. We face many challenges in the 21st century, and science education will help our citizens make informed decisions about public policy issues like energy and health to improve the quality of our lives.

The official biography below was current at the time of the award.

Zan Coonce has taught sixth grade science at Brown Elementary School in the Washoe County School District (WCSD), Reno, NV, for the past 12 years. She is an active member of the Technology Committee, where she established a technology plan for the school and secured a $50,000 grant to purchase new computers. To make science come alive, Mrs. Coonce created a sixth grade Living Museum, where students practice public speaking and share their knowledge of science during the science fair. Students research the childhood, education, and achievements of a scientist. They create posters, costumes, and props to depict their scientist and write and deliver a speech in character. Mrs. Coonce also chaired the annual Science Fair Committee for five years. As site trainer for the school's electronic grade book software, Mrs. Coonce conducted staff training classes for 40 teachers and provides ongoing support. She also took a course to become a site trainer for the WCSD data collection and progress monitoring system. Mrs. Coonce volunteered to teach a computer lab class once a week in addition to the five science classes she teaches every day. She also works during recess and after school to train and test sixth graders who want to earn the Presidential Physical Fitness Award. As a result the percentage of students earning the award has more than doubled. Instilling a love of science and discovery while remaining focused on state standards is Mrs. Coonce's primary goal. Colleagues describe her as a skilled, innovative, passionate, and dynamic teacher. She develops relationships with students to encourage them to flourish and do their best. Mrs. Coonce has a B.S. in elementary education from the University of Nevada, Reno. She is a National Board Certified Teacher and was designated a Certified Candidate Support Provider by the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards in 2008.
