As a teacher in a rural community, it is my responsibility to foster a love for science so students are confident to pursue careers as scientists, doctors, and engineers. The PAEMST award is an affirmation to teachers across America that STEM skills are critical as students strive to reach their potential. In a global economy where science and math are vital, it is important that my students be college and career ready. It is a great joy to share my passion for science with these students.

The official biography below was current at the time of the award.

Erin Renee King has taught mathematics and science concepts to gifted students in Appalachian Ohio for more than 10 years. She taught students in third through eighth grade at Felicity-Franklin Local Schools for 6 years and students in third through eighth grade at Adams County Schools for 4 years. To create opportunities for gifted students in this remote area, Renee collaborated with two other districts to create Virtual TAG, a program that blends online courses with face-to-face lessons. This virtual program differentiates mathematics and science instruction for gifted students. Each course ends in a culminating event, such as Chemistry Day or a Mission to the Moon at the Challenger Center. To financially support the program, Renee has written several grants to purchase laptop computers, science materials, and a SMART Board. Renee has presented sessions on virtual learning at local, state, and national conferences and coauthored the book Developing Units for Virtual Learning Environments. Renee coordinates the Annual Research Showcase and Project Citizen. She has coordinated trips to Costa Rica and New England and led the science club. Renee has a B.S in education from Shawnee State University and an M.Ed. from Ashland University. She is certified in elementary education and gifted education.
