The Presidential Award is an amazing honor; I do not have the words to express. It is a celebration of a teacher’s hard work and commitment to meaningful instruction. More importantly, it is an opportunity for a group of committed teachers to collaborate and learn from each other through research and reflection.

Courtney Niemeyer Billings, MT | K-6, Mathematics, 2010

Now in her 11th year of teaching, Courtney Niemeyer has taught kindergarten, first grade, and reading recovery and has been a mathematics instructional coach. Currently, Courtney teaches first grade at Bitterroot Elementary. The 2009 - 2010 academic year brought Courtney the opportunity to be an instructional mathematics coach for Billings Public Schools. As a coach, it was her job to support the professional growth of teachers by increasing their understanding of mathematics content and helping them to incorporate good instructional strategies. Courtney collaborated and reflected with teachers to develop meaningful learning experiences that promote cognitive and social growth in all students. Courtney believes that improving teacher instructional strategies will improve student achievement. In the classroom, Courtney is able to draw on her experiences as a mathematics coach to improve her own instruction. Furthermore, she continues to learn through professional development and reflection. Courtney takes advantage of leadership opportunities by presenting to teachers at the district and state levels. Courtney has a B.A. in elementary education from the University of Nebraska and an M.Ed. in interdisciplinary studies from Montana State University. She is a certified elementary school teacher.
