The Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching exemplifies to me the value that our nation places on quality instruction and the importance of science in today’s society. It underscores my belief that developing an understanding and appreciation of the world around us is a lifelong endeavor. That I am being considered for this award is a great honor for my students, community, family, and self.

The official biography below was current at the time of the award.

Lisa Zimmermann has been teaching for 22 years, 20 of which have been with the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) in Bavaria, Germany. Presently she teaches fifth grade at Hohenfels Elementary, with classes in language arts, health, and science. Lisa designs dynamic lessons that address student misconceptions through the use of probes and science notebooks. Her classes submerge students in scientific exploration via sound and video files, concrete models, children’s literature, hands-on investigations, and the use of an interactive whiteboard. A deep appreciation for nature led Lisa to sponsor a Garden and Gallery Crafts Club. Participants meet once a week throughout the year to study local flora and fauna. Club members share their knowledge by volunteering at a bird watching exhibit at the community’s annual Math, Science, and Technology night. Lisa has a B.S. in education from the University of Maine and an M.A. in educational technology from Michigan State University. She has elementary education certification with the State of Maine and DoDEA. Lisa is also certified with DoDEA for grades 1-12 as a mathematics teacher, media specialist, and school educational technologist.
