It is a tremendous honor to receive the Presidential Award. I strive daily to cultivate a growth mindset culture where students develop a love for mathematics while achieving their mathematical goals. This award also recognizes the influence of my professional mentors, both past and present, who taught me what it means to be a lifelong learner. I am extremely honored to accept the Presidential Award which has fueled my passion for and commitment to the art of pedagogy.

Melanie Ramey Staffordsville, KY | K-6, Mathematics, 2018

Melanie Ramey has taught for 11 years and has spent the last two years teaching fourth grade mathematics at Highland Elementary School. Melanie previously taught for one year at Central Elementary School and spent her first eight years at Meade Memorial Elementary School. Melanie provides differentiated instruction through blended learning using technology. She also uses a mastery learning model to meet the needs of learners at all levels. Students evaluate their learning and complete enrichment and intervention as needed to meet their targets. Melanie is a school, district, and regional leader. She has led professional development sessions on formative teaching and learning, growth mindset, best instructional practices for mathematics, mastery learning, and KAGAN structures. Melanie was a member of Shirley Clarke’s Outstanding Formative Assessment Kentucky Action Research Team and a recipient of the National Education Association’s Student Achievement Grant. She is a member of the Highland Elementary shared leadership team and positive behavioral interventions and supports team. Melanie earned a B.A., summa cum laude, in elementary education from Morehead State University and a M.A. in P-5 curriculum from Union College. She has an ED.S. in supervision of instruction from University of the Cumberlands. Melanie is certified in elementary education and supervision of instruction.
