The receipt of the Presidential Award is thrilling. Teachers who are honored with this award and their students have worked using research-based strategies to improve their knowledge and learning. I have been fortunate to have had wonderful mentors along the way to improve my teaching and work for continuous improvement, and am now working to mentor others. This award challenges me to continue with high expectations for all students and to continue sharing as a member of the teaching community.

Anne Marie Nicoll-Turner Ann Arbor, MI | K-6, Mathematics, 2016

Anne Marie Nicoll-Turner taught Math 6 through Geometry AC for 30 years. In her classroom and school, she worked hard to foster a discourse and technology rich environment. She is now the District Department Chair for Secondary Mathematics in Ann Arbor. Anne Marie worked with Algebra 1 teachers in Ann Arbor Public Schools and Oakland Schools teachers under a grant on formative assessment which was funded by the Hewlett Foundation. The grant material was commissioned by the Council of Chief State School Officers. Anne Marie has worked with the authors of the Connected Mathematics Project for more than 20 years. She worked on assessment revisions for version three and coordinated a pilot site. Anne Marie has helped with Connected Mathematics implementation in other school districts and presented at many conferences. Additionally, Anne Marie provides consultation services for a U.S. Department of Education grant in conjunction with Eastern Michigan University (EMU). The grant incorporates art and mathematics integrated lessons into local schools, with EMU preservice teachers. Anne Marie earned a B.S. in mathematics education and a M.A. in middle school curriculum from Eastern Michigan University, with additional coursework at Michigan State University. She is certified in kindergarten through eighth grade general education and ninth grade mathematics.
